How to Choose the Right Scrum Certification?

Aut id ex tempore omnis rem

Did you know the word ‘SCRUM’ comes from the game of rugby?

The concept is similar to the game of rugby, where the entire team is trying to push the ball forward.

Scrum does not have strict and stone craved laws, but instead is flexible and can used across all industries from across the globe. In short, scrum helps in handling projects in an easy way. One does not require to have a software developer degree to earn a Scrum Certification.

Certified Scrum Master vs Professional Scrum Master

Both the titles are widely accepted when it comes to choosing the certificates. Let me share a little history.

Certified Scrum Master Certificate is given by Scrum Alliance started by Ken Schweber along with a group of co-founders.

Ken eventually left scrum alliance to form Scrum.org where he renamed the course as Professional Scrum Master. The major difference is CSM required training and exam, whereas PSM requires to give just an exam.

Of Course there are many who give certificates apart from these two giants. But how do you know which one is right for you? For beginners, these certificates as entry-level courses. So, to start with both are good courses to start.

Which one is more popular?

Both have equal value but Certified Scrum Master holds slightly more value than PSM.

Once you are done with the entry-level certification, you can think of specializing in one depending on your career path.

As there are 3 roles in Scrum, one can go for CSM, Certified Scrum Product Owner, or Certified Scrum Developer. But Scrum Alliance has recently made a change and added an ‘Advanced Course’ so the certifications are specific to each role.

If you are looking to provide training in Scrum then Certified Scrum Trainer is the right course for you to begin. There is another course, Certified Team Coach which trains you to become a successful coach. Looking for something higher? There is another course called Certified Enterprise Coach, looking at enterprise-level coaching.

Lets now look at Scrum.org certifications

  • Professional Scrum Master – Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Professional Scrum Product Owner
  • Professional Scrum Developer
  • Scaled Professional Scrum
  • Professional Scrum with Kanban
  • Professional Agile Leadership.

There is an additional course called Professional Agile Leadership – Essentials.

Initially, the Scrum framework was used only in the IT industry, but today, it can be applied across all industries. Both certifications demand good knowledge as they have the same value in the job market.
